Loose Screws in Air Guns
GOT A SCREW LOOSE????
It can happen to anyone.... for some inexplicable reason your air rifle won't shoot like it used to. But don't go ripping that new scope off the airgun and sending it back to the factory, or blaming those new fancy match airgun pellets, start by looking at the simplest possible cause.... loose stock screws. While I'm there are numerous possibilities, loose screws that attach the action to the stock are probably one of the most common and most easily fixed causes for loss of accuracy in air guns.
Usually there are two screws in the forend (one on either side) and one screw through the trigger guard on the air rifle and holds the receiver to the stock. All three of these screws MUST be kept snug. Always use a screwdriver designed for air guns or a properly fitting allen wrench. Household screwdrivers have tapered blades and usually cause damage to airgun screws. Always use a snug fitting gunsmith screwdriver where the blade has parallel faces. Phillips screw slots come in various sizes and angles. The tip should never be sloppy when fitted to the screwhead. Allen screws also come in a variety of sizes and a proper fit should not be loose in the head. Air guns made outside the United States are likely to use metric screws.
Remember I said that the stock screws should be snug. Do not over tighten - seat the screws firmly and stop. Excessive pressure can crush the wood under the screw. Follow all instructions supplied with the gun by the manufacturer. Screws can and do loosen just due to normal shooting vibration. Also changes in the wood moisture content, due to humidity, can loosen stock screws in air guns. Check your airgun stock screws frequently, and make that the first place you look whenever you notice erratic accuracy in your air rifle.
